While the most highly sought after goods are still food, electronics and pharmaceuticals, what makes cargo high risk is changing with the times. In 2011, the most notable jump in cargo theft was in the area of precious metals. In the first half of last year, thefts of loads of copper, aluminum and other metals rose by nearly 63 percent, with an average loss of more than $200,000.
The good news is you can protect your freight and yourself with a little planning.
- Make yourself aware of high-theft areas.
- Drive at least 150 miles or more from a high-risk site before stopping.
- When you do stop for fuel or rest, pay attention to the other vehicles and people in the area.
- Park in well-lit areas and back your trailer against a fence, door or wall.
- Seal the load and document the seal number on the bill of lading.
- Use kingpin and trailer locks to protect your equipment
- Use an air-cuff lock to guard your truck.
