Navigating Intersections
HOME >  Landstar Advantage > March

An intersection is one of the most complex traffic situations that motorists encounter and can present dangerous challenges to even the most cautious and experienced professional drivers. Intersection-related crashes account for 40 percent of all reported crashes and 21.5 percent of all traffic fatalities, according to Federal Highway Administration statistics.

A professional driver has the responsibility to approach, enter and cross intersections prepared for the unexpected.
  • Slow down when approaching an intersection.
  • Cover the brake with your right foot in order to increase reaction time.
  • Know what is going on around your vehicle by scanning the intersection ahead.
  • Know where you are going, and which lane you should be in. Before crossing an intersection, look left, then right, and then left again to check for traffic.
  • Show others what your intentions are by using turn signals and lane position.
  • Do not block an intersection while stopped in traffic.
Crossing intersections at night can be especially hazardous. Keep the sides of your truck clean and make sure side marker lights are operational. Use extra care when hauling dark-colored empty flatbed trailers.

According to the Federal Highway Administration, the most common citation issued involving truck/car collisions at an intersection is failure to yield. Remember, when approaching intersections, always be prepared to stop.
