Safety:
Safety Thursdays
> August
Now is the time to prepare for all of the weather situations you may encounter this winter, such as snow, ice, rain, fog or clear bright weather. They all affect your ability to safely control and stop your vehicle. Make sure you adjust your speed and allow more space to stop when conditions are poor. If weather conditions are unsafe, it may be necessary to pull off the road into a safe area until conditions improve.
To maintain a safe following distance:
| • |
Slow down when approaching an intersection.
|
| • |
Cover the brake with your right foot in order to increase reaction time.
|
| • |
Know what is going on around your vehicle by scanning the intersection ahead.
|
| • |
Know where you are going, and which lane you should be in. Before crossing an intersection, look left, then right, and then left again to check for traffic.
|
| • |
Show others what your intentions are by using turn signals and lane position.
|
| • |
Do not block an intersection while stopped in traffic.
|
Crossing intersections at night can be especially hazardous. Keep the sides of truck clean and make sure side marker lights are operational. Use extra care when hauling dark-colored empty flatbed trailers.
According to the Federal Highway Administration, the most common citation issued involving truck/car collisions at an intersection is failure to yield. Remember, when approaching intersections, always be prepared to stop.
