Safety:
Safety Thursdays
> November
Tractor-trailers have four blind spots also known as No-Zones. These areas are in front, behind and on both sides of a commercial vehicle. One-third of all accidents among large trucks and other vehicles occur when a vehicle travels in these positions, which can virtually hide another motor vehicle.
When changing lanes, a vehicle in the blind spot may not be seen, so drivers must make extra allowances to protect themselves in areas of limited sight.
Landstar participates in No-Zone events to assist in educating the motoring public about blind spots. Driver education instructors, agents, and BCOs can schedule a No-Zone event by calling their area’s field safety manager.
There are many techniques truck operators can use to avoid lane change or sideswipe accidents.
| • |
Avoid frequent lane changes, and only change lanes when necessary.
|
| • |
Trucks should stay in the truck usage lane.
|
| • |
Speed should be adjusted to the speed of traffic flow, but never over the limit.
|
| • |
Mirrors should be checked every 5-7 seconds.
|
| • |
Intentions should be signaled and signaled early.
|
Free blind spot mirrors are available to every BCO. Contact the Safety department for more information.
