Defensive Driving is defined by The National Safety Council as:
“Driving to save lives, time and money in spite of the conditions around you and the actions of others.”
The Defensive Driving Formula
| • |
Recognize the hazard.
|
| • |
Understand the defense.
|
| • |
Act correctly, in time. |
The defensive driver expects the unexpected, such as:
| • |
Driving in No-Zones – those areas behind and beside a commercial truck where the truck driver has limited or zero visibility including the left rear quarter, the right rear quarter, and directly behind the truck at a short distance.
|
| • |
Changing lanes abruptly in front of a truck. This is especially dangerous when a car cuts in front of a large truck on a downhill grade, when the weight of the truck and its speed combined make slowing down difficult.
|
| • |
Maneuvering to the right of a truck that is making a right turn. |
| • |
Following a truck too closely, especially in the No-Zone. |
| • |
Misjudging an approaching truck's speed at an intersection, then making a left turn in front of the truck
|
| • |
Merging improperly into traffic, forcing a truck to maneuver or brake quickly. |
| • |
Failure to slow down or speed up when a truck begins to change lanes or merge.
|
Remember, it’s everyone’s responsibility to drive defensively.
