Landstar BCOs take orientation and refresher classes in safety and compliance, where they are required to inspect their equipment before, during and after every trip (392.7). Beyond that, Landstar BCOs take personal pride in ownership of their equipment. And because they own and operate their own businesses, they understand that equipment which performs poorly or breaks down means time spent off the road and money out of their pocket.
All BCOs must perform pre-trip inspections as prescribed by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration in its Safety Regulations handbook. No commercial motor vehicle is allowed to be driven until the driver has inspected the following parts and accessories of their vehicle and determined them to be in good working order.
- Service brakes, including trailer brake connections
- Parking (hand) brake
- Steering mechanism
- Lights and reflectors
- Tires
- Horn
- Windshield wipers
- Rear-vision mirrors
- Coupling devices
- Wheels and rims
- Emergency equipment
- Load securement
Post-trip inspections must also be performed and documented in accordance with Federal regulations. Drivers must prepare a written inspection report on their vehicle at the end of each work day. Drivers must also be prepared for Federal periodic inspections and roadside inspections.
