The National Highway Safety Transportation Administration defines aggressive driving as "an individual who commits a combination of moving traffic offenses so as to endanger other persons or property." Aggressive driving behavior includes speeding, improper or excessive lane changes, or reckless passing and other unsafe practices.
Are you an aggressive driver? Take the test. Do you:
- Express frustration by taking it out on your fellow motorists?
- Fail to pay attention when driving by reading, eating, drinking or talking on the phone?
- Tailgate?
- Make frequent lane changes, whipping in and out of lanes to get ahead?
- Run red lights?
- Speed?
If you answered yes to any of the questions above, consider these tips.
- Plan Ahead.
- Allow extra time.
- Concentrate. Don’t allow yourself to become distracted by talking on your cell phone, eating, drinking or putting on makeup.
- Relax. Tune the radio to your favorite relaxing music to calm your nerves.
- Drive the Posted Speed Limit.
When confronted with aggressive drivers:
- Get out of the way.
- Do not challenge them by speeding up or attempting to hold-your-own in your travel lane.
- Avoid eye contact, as that can sometimes enrage an aggressive driver.
- Gestures. Ignore gestures and refuse to return them.
- Report serious aggressive driving. But be sure to pull over to a safe location before calling authorities on your cell phone.
- FIDO - Forget It and Drive On
