Jacksonville, Florida (NASDAQ-LSTR) Landstar System, Inc., a safety-first non-asset based provider of transportation capacity, has named Joy Cone Company Landstar's 2005 Mutual Understanding of Safety Together (M.U.S.T.) Customer of the Year.

Landstar's extensive outreach safety effort includes employees, business capacity owners (BCOs), agents, customers and the public at large. In addition to education, awareness and training programs, the company's M.U.S.T. program brings customers together with Landstar representatives to develop safer working environments at freight facilities. The result is often a higher level of productivity and reduced healthcare costs due to work-related injuries. The term business capacity owner refers to the independent business owners who own and operate the equipment used to haul freight.

Joy Cone worked with independent Landstar Agent Shirley Anhalt to implement safety programs at its plants in Flagstaff, Arizona, and Hermitage, Pennsylvania. Specifically, the ice cream cone maker implemented processes to eliminate the possibility of trailers being moved from loading docks while people are still inside loading the product, installed additional lighting in trailer drop areas and installed Landstar's "Spot-Check” kits on its company-owned tractors. The kits include a Landstar-designed device that eliminates guess work when measuring push-rod stroke for proper brake adjustment.

"We're delighted to be recognized by Landstar and feel honored to be part of a unique partnership to promote workplace safety,” said Stanton, manager of Joy Cone's Flagstaff manufacturing plant. "These awards demonstrate that safe operations go hand in hand with good customer service. We may be a small company in a small industry, but at Joy Cone, safety is a big priority.”

"Congratulations to Joy Cone for demonstrating its commitment to safety by taking action to eliminate potential safety hazards at its facilities,” said Landstar President and CEO Henry Gerkens. "Landstar's M.U.S.T. program demonstrates that great organizations can achieve great things when committed to reaching a common goal.”
