January 21, 2004 Jacksonville, Florida - (NASDAQ: LSTR) Landstar System, Inc., a safety-first provider of transportation capacity, made Forbes magazine's Platinum 400 List of America's Best Big Companies, for the fifth consecutive year. Landstar is ranked among the top companies in the Transportation category.

Forbes says "To create our annual platinum list of the best big companies in America, we looked across 26 industries and found big companies with the best aggregate scores for both long and short term financial returns, plus other performance and valuation measures."

Only publicly traded companies with $1 billion or more in revenue, and a stock price of a least $5, were considered for the list. For each of the 26 core industries, Forbes ranked the constituent companies against their peers for five-year total return as well as long- and short-term sales and earnings growth. A financial analytics service firm provided Forbes with accounting and governance scores. Then the publication's editors and writers judged each company on additional factors including market leadership, innovation and efficiency.

"Landstar's success hinges on our unique business model, which enables us to continually provide growth opportunities for independent sales agents and business capacity owners while delivering excellence in transportation capacity," said Landstar President and COO Henry Gerkens. "We are proud to be among the American companies singled out by Forbes for it's strategy, stamina and growth."

Details on the annual ranking are available in the January issue of Forbes magazine or via www.forbes.com.
