February 9, 2004 Jacksonville, Florida - (NASDAQ: LSTR) Landstar System, Inc., a safety-first provider of transportation capacity, was honored with multiple awards at the Florida Trucking Association (FTA) Safety Management Council Truck Safety Awards ceremony in January. Landstar earned FTA awards for first and third place, Driver of the Month, and Safety Professional of the Year.
A beaming Mike Cobb, Landstar Safety director, proudly received the Safety Professional of Year award. Upon accepting the honor, he recognized Landstar's commitment to safety as a team effort.
"Safety at Landstar isn't about one person or one department," he said. "It's the entire company working together to do the right thing - to make the highways safer. I'm proud to be a part of that."
The award is the second Cobb has picked up recently. In December, Cobb was selected second runner-up out of a field of 150 finalists for Safety Professional of the Year by KellerOnline, an Internet-based safety management system.
Landstar Express America and the Landstar Carrier Group also brought home FTA Safety Awards. Landstar Express America took first place in the 500,000- to 1-million-mile fleet safety category, and Landstar Ligon finished in third place in the 1- to 1.5-million-mile category.
The FTA also honored Landstar business capacity owner (BCO) Clovis Cook, along with 11 other professional truck operators who were selected Drivers of the Month during 2003. Cook was chosen in October and was in the running for FTA Driver of the Year.
"We're pleased the Florida Trucking Association recognizes the quality programs, employees and independent business capacity owners who make up the Landstar system," said Landstar President and COO Henry Gerkens. "It's the individuals in our unique business model that make the system work as a whole to provide Landstar customers with safe, reliable transportation capacity services time after time."
