January 17, 2001 Jacksonville, FL - For the second year in a row, Landstar System, Inc., a safety-first transportation and information services company, has been recognized by Forbes Magazine as one of the nation's best big companies. In its January 8, 2001 issue, Landstar is among the top 17 named in the Travel and Transport category of Forbes' Platinum 400 List of America's Best Big Companies.
According to the publication, Forbes began its annual search for "America's Best Big Companies" with Market Guide's database of 1,300 companies with annual sales of at least $1 billion. To make the list, companies had to pass a set of hurdles even more stringent than in previous years measuring long and short-term return on capital, and growth in sales and earnings. Of last year's Platinum 400, a total of 134 companies that are still publicly traded failed to make the list in 2001.
"It takes more than mere metrics to join the Forbes Platinum 400," said Forbes Senior Statistics Editor Brian Zajac. "These corporate titans offer the best mix of growth and profitability, but also something more - an ability to adapt, innovate and pinch pennies."
"Landstar embodies the traits Forbes editors see as essential to growth and profitability - the capability and willingness to adapt to change; a hunger to innovate and go against the grain and resiliency when the industry is down," said Landstar Chairman, President and CEO Jeff Crowe. "Landstar's unique business model is fueled by entrepreneurial spirit and the desire to be the best at delivering safe reliable transportation services. We're pleased that Forbes recognizes that's what enables us to provide a great return to investors."
The Travel and Transport category includes airlines, freight forwarding, trains, trucking and shipping. More details on the annual ranking are available at www.forbes.com.
