Landstar named Rick Owens, owner of independent Landstar agency Owens Leasing, Inc. in League City, Texas, as its 2022 Landstar Safety Officer of the Year.

Each month, Landstar names one Landstar Safety Officer of the Month, from which the Landstar Safety Officer of the Year is selected. Owens, like the 11 other finalists in 2022, leads an independent Landstar agency with an impeccable safety record and a staff that continuously looks for ways to improve.

“Rick’s dedication to safety has certainly paid off, with zero cargo claims reported for Owens Leasing in 2022!” said Matt Miller, Landstar Transportation Logistics executive vice president of safety, compliance, trailer management and insurance administration, during the April 14 ceremony. “Agents who put such an emphasis on safety, like Owens, are key to making Landstar a safety-first transportation solutions provider.”

Owens is committed to fostering a strong safety culture at Owens Leasing, Inc. and is known for regularly promoting Landstar’s safety-first culture by co-sponsoring an annual safety meeting for independent owner-operators leased to Landstar. Owens is a regular on the monthly Safety Thursday Conference Call, and shines a light whenever possible on Landstar safety initiatives such as the M.U.S.T. customer and No-Zone programs. Mutual Understanding of Safety Together or M.U.S.T. brings the customer and freight agent together to customize safety initiatives. LSOs also can arrange for a private or public event using a trailer with a special No-Zone decal that shows drivers how to safely share the roads with commercial vehicles.

Each of Landstar’s approximately 1,100 independent agent locations names an individual responsible for the safety performance of the agency. The designated Landstar Safety Officer promotes safe, secure and compliant driving, participates in Landstar’s network-wide monthly Safety Thursday Conference Call and supports customer safety initiatives.
