Transportation company an industry trendsetter in use of wireless data services
September 12, 2000 Jacksonville, FL - Landstar System, Inc., a safety-first transportation and information services company, and AT&T Wireless Services (NYSE: AWE) announced today a first-of-its-kind business-to-business application of wireless Internet phone service for the transportation industry in North America. Through AT&T Digital PocketNetTM service, Landstar's 7,100 business capacity owners (BCOs) now have the option to use their wireless Internet-ready phone to access the company's website and conduct business online.
Landstar's BCOs, exclusive independent contractors who supply the company with the equipment used to haul freight, use Landstar's Intranet website to choose freight and make other business decisions. They say the new wireless Internet service helps them better manage their time on the road.
"It's great when you can't use your laptop," said Linda Kennedy, a Landstar BCO who, along with her husband, has been a professional truck operator for more than 20 years. "I can find freight and get specific directions while we're unloading, so it saves us money in terms of time and fuel."
Landstar was one of the first transportation and logistics companies to utilize Internet technology to post available freight, providing access to critical information to its business capacity owners, right in the cabs of their trucks. AT&T Digital PocketNetsm service gives unlimited access to Landstar's corporate databases, schedules, weather, street maps, e-mail and contact information from the screen of their wireless phones.
"These BCOs work in mobile offices, so it's critical to their success that they have mobile access to information when they are on the go," said Landstar Chairman, President and CEO Jeff Crowe. "AT&T Digital PocketNet service is a natural fit for us because it enables them to cost-effectively conduct business on the road."
AT&T's flat-rate monthly fee gives Landstar exclusive independent contractors and employees affordable access to the wireless Internet from an Internet-ready wireless hand set. When combined with AT&T Digital One Ratesm or AT&T Group Calling Plans, the all-you-can-use AT&T Digital PocketNet service 2000-Gateway rate plan offers unlimited AT&T Digital PocketNet data usage for a monthly access charge of $14.99 - so users can search the Landstar website for as long as they need, without added cost.
"Landstar's BCOs will now have the ability to make better decisions because the information they need on the road is readily available on their phone," said Tom Trinneer, vice president of Data Product Development, AT&T Wireless Services. "This industry application is yet another example of how wireless data services are redefining the way business gets done today."
Utilizing Landstar's Intranet application, PhoneOnline.com, a cellular phone data communications integrator, created a customized program to work with wireless application protocol servers and mobile data-integration technologies.
AT&T Digital PocketNet service uses the AT&T Wireless IP (Internet Protocol) network and the Mitsubishi MobileAccessä or the Ericsson R280LX wireless Internet phones. For wireless data, the phone works on the Cellular Digital Packet Data (CDPD) network that AT&T Wireless Services uses for wireless IP service to provide data at speeds up to 19.2 KBps and is available in more than 3,000 cities across the United States.
"We had the vision long before the technologies were available," said Bob Luminati, Landstar Executive Vice President and CIO. "This deal with AT&T Wireless Services brings that vision to life."
