This Veterans Day, Landstar honors all who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces. We are proud to count many veterans among our agents, business capacity owners (BCOs), and employees. Their leadership, resilience, and dedication continue to shape Landstar’s culture of safety and service.
Here are a few stories from across Landstar that celebrate their service to our country and their ongoing impact.
Mike Cashner served more than 25 years in the U.S. Army, most recently as Deputy Division Chief in the Force Projection and Distribution Division. His assignments took him across the globe — to Germany, Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait, and Afghanistan — before he became Chief Military Advisor to the Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Transportation Policy.
After retiring in 2013, Cashner began his next mission as Vice President of Government Services at Landstar. His expertise in logistics, transportation, and global operations positioned him to lead Landstar’s government and defense initiatives. In 2024, he received the prestigious National Defense Transportation Association (NDTA) President’s Award, recognizing his outstanding leadership and 11 years of dedicated service as an NDTA committee chairperson advancing the organization’s values.
Cashner applies the same leadership and operational precision from his Army career to his work at Landstar. Through Department of Defense carrier certification programs — including those for arms, ammunition, and explosives (AA&E) — he continues to work alongside veterans who have built thriving independent businesses.
“I am truly grateful that Landstar recognizes the value that veterans bring,” Cashner said. “Veterans understand teamwork, problem-solving, and safety culture — qualities that contribute directly to Landstar’s success.”
John DeCillo enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1989, serving on active duty for 13 years. He began his career at Yokota Air Base in Japan as an aircraft metals technology specialist, maintaining C-130 Hercules aircraft — the Air Force’s legendary tactical transport plane renowned for its reliability and vital role in every major U.S. military operation since the 1950s. He later served at Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland, where he advanced his technical expertise while earning degrees in metallurgy and industrial technology from Southern Illinois University.
After separating from military service, DeCillo built a career as a quality supply engineer in the rail transportation industry. When the COVID-19 pandemic led to company-wide layoffs, he adapted once again — earning his commercial driver’s license and joining Landstar as an independent owner-operator. Today, he hauls C-130 propellers, the very same aircraft components he once maintained during his service in the Air Force in Japan. DeCillo approaches each haul with a military mindset: precision, preparation, and preventative maintenance — what he calls being “mission ready.”
“People say to me, ‘You did exactly what you said you were going to do,’” he said. “And I tell them, that’s the purpose of having a goal.”
Dave Revis joined the U.S. Marine Corps in 1973 — part of the Department of the Navy — and served for 25 years. He deployed to Vietnam as a ground support technician, maintaining and repairing the equipment used to service military aircraft. After returning home, he continued his service in the Army National Guard, where he was promoted to the rank of sergeant.
After leaving active duty, Revis worked as a radio and motor transport operator before joining Ryder Truck Lines just before Landstar’s formation in 1988. He remained leased to Landstar for more than three decades, retiring just a few weeks ago after earning the Two Million Mile Safe Driver Award — an honor recognizing two million miles driven without a preventable accident.
Revis carried his mechanical skills and mission-first mindset from the Marines into trucking, embracing the independence and responsibility that come with the open road.
“I’ve had my independence out there,” Revis said. “I set high standards and kept them. That’s what freedom means to me.”
Troy Shasko’s service began in 1983 at the U.S. Army Aviation Center of Excellence at Fort Rucker, Alabama, where he trained as a helicopter pilot and later served as a transportation logistics officer in the Army National Guard. His time in uniform taught him the importance of discipline, precision, and perseverance.
In 1986, after serving in the military, Shasko returned to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to join his father’s independent freight agency. Alongside his brother, he helped expand the business into what is now the Shasko Team. In 2019, Shasko earned Landstar’s Chief Executive Circle (CEC) award, recognizing 10 consecutive years of excellence and more than $40 million in revenue. Today, the agency includes his nieces and three daughters, including Ashley Shasko, a recent CEC award recipient.
Shasko leads his agency with the same values instilled in him by the military — teamwork, respect, and unwavering commitment to the mission.
“Being in the military is about discipline,” Shasko said. “You learn to make sacrifices, and that builds grit. Whether it’s military service or Landstar service, it’s about doing the job right and showing respect.”
From the skies to the seas, and from the front lines to the highways, veterans carry the spirit of service wherever they go. Their steadfast commitment to safety, security and purpose reminds us of what it means to serve with honor — both on and off the road.
Landstar’s independent agents enjoy the administrative, sales and technological support of a financially secure industry leader, along with the freedom that comes with owning your own business.
