At more than 656 feet tall and weighing about 2,300 tons, the Manitowoc 31000 is one of the tallest land-based crawler cranes in the world. It’s often deployed on major power plant and stadium projects for years at a time. Moving a crane of this scale to a job site can require more than 145 trucks.
For heavy haul crane transport like this, independent Landstar Agent Tony Lay of Triple C Logistics in Walton, Kentucky, is known for coordinating the planning and execution needed to keep ultra-heavy-lift crawler crane moves on track.
When a project demands a crane as formidable as the Manitowoc 31000, the experience of the transport agent is crucial for a safe and successful delivery. Lay has earned a reputation over the past 12 years for his extensive expertise in heavy haul cranes, which sometimes rivals that of the operators themselves.
“Whenever a major haul is needed, we’re the go-to agency because we resolve issues on-site and clarify machinery details,” Lay explained. “There’s very little room for error.”

Triple C Logistics is the exclusive Landstar agency for Maxim Crane, North America’s largest crane-owning company, according to American Cranes & Transport (ACT) magazine. Specializing in crane rentals for the nation’s largest construction firms, Lay ensures the super-sized machinery reaches the project managers who need it under tight deadlines and budget restrictions.
Although Triple C Logistics operates in a highly specialized niche, Lay said it didn’t happen by accident. He earned Maxim Crane’s trust through years of dedicated study, including hours poring over manuals and product guides, until he knew the equipment as well as the manufacturers. It was hard work that paid off, however, eventually bringing in more customers within the industry.
“Knowledge is essential for heavy hauls of this scale,” he said. “I study every piece of literature I can find. I’ll memorize the top five cranes a company moves. It’s an ongoing process, and I’m still learning every day.”
That said, it’s not a competition for Lay. A heavy haul mentor for independent Landstar agents who participate in Landstar’s Grow Your Star agent-development program, he is passionate about building up other Landstar agents who are interested in complex, over-dimensional freight, which can be intimidatingly full of scenarios that include drive time restrictions, route surveys, load securement parameters, and permits. However, the pay-off can be as big as the cargo. For Lay, just seeing the final product, a fully built and operational super-crane, makes him feel in awe of the accomplishment.
“It’s an eye-opening experience,” he said. “Seeing the sheer size of them, I feel like a kid in a candy store.”
For many customers, moves like the Manitowoc 31000 often underscore the importance of experienced planning, clear communication, and the coordination required to manage routing, permits, and tight job-site schedules. When the freight is over-dimensional and the timeline is fixed, having the right team may help reduce surprises and keep projects moving.
