How a Healthy Mouth Can Help Keep You in Business

Maintenance and routine truck inspections are an important part of staying on the road and keeping your transportation business moving forward. Your dental health is no different. Like routine maintenance keeps your vehicle running efficiently, good oral health can help keep your whole body healthy.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that 47% of adults over the age of 30 have some form of periodontal disease, also known as gum disease. That number increases to 70% for adults 65 years and older.

Gum disease is primarily the result of an infection and inflammation of the gums caused by bacteria in the mouth. In its mildest form it’s known as gingivitis, but as it progresses, it will develop into periodontitis. The AAP warns that periodontal diseases usually go unnoticed until it is in an advanced stage. This is why routine checkups are so important.

An article published on says gum disease can exacerbate existing heart conditions. The article also notes another similarity between gum disease and heart disease – they tend to be silent until an unfortunate episode occurs.

The gateway to respiratory illnesses and other diseases

An article published by The Mayo Clinic points out that like many parts of our bodies, our mouths are a breeding ground for bacteria. However, unlike other parts of the body, the mouth is the gateway to the rest of the body and it gives bacteria the green light to enter the bloodstream. In general, this steady release of inflammatory markers into the bloodstream is hard on your body. Regular brushing and flossing help keep this bacteria in check.

The article explains that bacteria can be aspirated into the lungs and can contribute to pneumonia. Studies show that bacteria from gum disease can travel to the brain and contribute to the development or worsening of Alzheimer’s disease. There are even studies that show a link between oral health and Rheumatoid arthritis and certain types of cancer.

The diabetes connection

Diabetes and gum disease are often linked because people with diabetes are more prone to infections, says the AAP. But the connection between gum disease and diabetes goes both ways and is often viewed as a complication of the other. Gum disease can make it harder for diabetics to control their blood sugar and can increase the risk for diabetic complications.

Time for an inspection

Your smile is a worthy investment. Invest a little time every day to keep it healthy with regular brushing and flossing. The American Dental Association, Colgate and the Cleveland Clinic agree that most adults need a routine dental exam at least every six months, and if you have active periodontal disease, you may need to get a professional cleaning more frequently.

Just like vehicle repairs, typically, dental issues will not go away or fix themselves, and over time they only become more expensive to repair.
