Landstar’s independent owner-operators and agents have a reputation for delivering excellence, whether on or off the road. When a customer, peer or the motoring public encounters outstanding service from someone in Landstar’s network, they can nominate them for recognition through the Star of Quality program.  

Since 1996, Landstar has granted the Star of Quality Award to agents and business capacity owners (BCOs) who’ve gone the extra mile. After 28 years, Landstar recently issued its 10,000th star.  

“We award Stars of Quality to Landstar agents and BCOs who don’t settle for acceptable,” said Gregg Nelson, vice president of BCO retention. “These stars represent the pride and commitment of going above and beyond in achieving personal excellence.”  

Nominees receive a bronze, silver, gold or platinum lapel pin and recognition in Landstar’s quarterly newsletter. Each tier represents how many awards a representative of Landstar has received — with some exceptional agents or BCOs earning up to 10 or more gold stars. 

As an example of a star-worthy performance, four BCOs went above and beyond in customer service while transporting equipment for a 12-day Battle of the Bands showcase. According to the nomination, the band director, members and event crew commended the BCOs’ dedication to safety and dependability during their tour last February, saying they ensured a flawless trip while students performed at college campuses across the U.S. While receiving any Star of Quality is a great achievement, only 55 of the 10,000 awards have been a Platinum Star of Quality. A platinum award recognizes exceptional circumstances and is intended for those who’ve shown courage in a life-or-death situation. 

Most recently, BCO Ronald Vogal stopped a dangerous altercation between a pregnant woman and her husband, who was threatening her with a knife at a gas station in Knoxville, Tennessee. A military veteran, Vogal bravely intervened and called the police leading to the man’s arrest. Luckily, Vogal acted swiftly and safely rescued the woman from a potentially life-threatening situation — earning him recognition with a Platinum Star of Quality for his heroic deed.  

Congratulations to the thousands of agents and BCOs who have positively affected someone’s day and received recognition for going above and beyond in freight transportation services.
