Landstar on Capitol Hill

Landstar representatives recently joined leaders of the Truckload Carriers Association (TCA) in Washington, D.C., to meet with key decision-makers and advocate for truckers and the transportation industry. According to the TCA, the joint visit in July was a “resounding success.”

Landstar Vice President and Chief Safety and Operations Officer Matt Miller and Vice President of Safety and Compliance Shelly Seaton were accompanied by TCA Manager of Government Affairs Hailey Betham to Capitol Hill, where they met with senators and members of Congress to discuss proposed solutions to several issues facing the transportation industry.

Discussions ranged from efforts to expand truck parking and questions about hair follicle drug testing, to opposition over increased legal truck weight limits and expanding efforts to combat cargo theft and fraud. The face-to-face interaction continued long-standing advocacy efforts as Congress prepares for the next transportation reauthorization bill.

According to the TCA, the consensus of the 13 lawmakers who attended reported support on key concerns, namely infrastructure improvements for truck parking and initiatives to combat cargo theft and fraud, including a bipartisan bill aimed at combating organized retail crime.

“Landstar actively collaborates with industry organizations like the Truckload Carriers Association to advocate for policies which support the trucking community,” Miller said. “Our commitment to Landstar truck owner-operators extends beyond direct service to independent business owners—we also work to shape regulatory frameworks in ways that benefit their long-term success.”

While legislative reform for the truckload industry is part of the TCA’s core mission, the association recognizes the importance of members like Landstar in furthering advocacy efforts that help independent owner-operators continue to provide customers with safe and reliable transportation services.

“We were thrilled to welcome our friends from Landstar to Washington, D.C.,” said Betham. “It was encouraging to hear members of Congress express a real willingness to work with us on solutions. These conversations were productive and energizing, and we’re already looking forward to having Landstar return to Capitol Hill.”
