Landstar’s Overall M.U.S.T. Customer of the Year

A plan to increase supply chain and facility security earned Southwire Company, LLC, a leading manufacturer of wire and cable used to transmit electricity, the Landstar Overall M.U.S.T. Customer of the Year award for 2020. Mutual Understanding of Safety Together, or M.U.S.T, is Landstar’s unique customer safety program created in 2000 to help Landstar customers implement best practices in safety. With nearly one in two new homes built in the United States containing a product made or supplied by Southwire, supply chain safety and security is not an option, but an important cornerstone of the company’s foundation.

According to Southwire, the company produces half of the cable used to transmit and distribute electricity throughout the nation. More than half of the world’s refined copper passes through one of its SCR® systems, and its wire plays a key role in the manufacturing of homes and other products including automotive wiring harnesses and electrical motors.

The Landstar safety team and independent Landstar freight agent Lisa Nestor, owner of Success Transportation, Inc., collaborated with Southwire to address concerns and develop a plan to help its freight get delivered securely, on time and damage-free. Nestor led a M.U.S.T. customer visit at a Southwire location where the wire manufacturer’s employees were encouraged to listen to the monthly Landstar Safety Thursday Conference Call. Following the call, Nestor and Landstar safety representatives toured the Southwire facility to review loading dock systems and securement processes.

“Together, Landstar and Southwire reviewed carrier safety and securement procedures at the facility to support our mutual commitment to a safety-first culture,” said Landstar Transportation Logistics Vice President of Safety and Compliance Mike Cobb. “Lisa, her agency and Landstar’s safety personnel did a great job working with Southwire to help increase security at the customer’s facility by creating a system to confirm the identity of each driver, truck and trailer arriving at the plant.”

Traditionally presented during Landstar’s annual agent convention, this year Landstar President and CEO Jim Gattoni made the M.U.S.T. Customer of the Year announcement during a presentation to independent Landstar agents via a Cisco WebEx® conference call. On the call, Gattoni also recognized Nestor and Success Transportation, Inc. as the independent Landstar agency that provides Southwire with transportation logistics services.
