Landstar Celebrates Women in Transportation

More than ever, women are looking to maximize their career potential in the transportation industry. In honor of International Women's Day, we spoke with several women entrepreneurs across Landstar’s network.

What is the most valuable career advice you have ever received?

"First, never be afraid to learn something new. Second, if you are afraid, do it anyway. Lastly, NEVER say, 'This is how we've always done it.' It’s important to invest in yourself, ask questions, and really listen to the answers.

My husband and I are team drivers who invest in ourselves and our equipment. We’ve surrounded ourselves with like-minded, successful people who are now good friends. We’ve also asked tons of questions and sorted out the answers. Even if one of us was afraid to step out of our comfort zone, we did it anyway.

Also, be willing to do the same for others. We've enjoyed mentoring other teams to find their path at Landstar."

What is the key to your success?

"Our success stems from a culture built on three simple principles: Do the right thing. Do the best you can and show care and concern to all.

These values build trust within our team and resonate with clients. That connection is a significant driver of our ongoing success."

Who deserves credit for your success?

"Two people have influenced me to be successful. First, my mom has always been a very hard-working, driven role model, and I strive to make her proud of my accomplishments. Additionally, my spouse Gretchen has taught me a lot about being an owner-operator. By watching her work on our equipment, I have learned to do it myself. I can make minor repairs on the road without going to the shop!"

What is the most valuable career advice you have ever received?

"My dad, who had many years of experience working in transportation, gave me the best advice I've ever received in my career. He told me to surround myself with a great team that shares my life goals. He said that sales is a numbers game, and to approach every day with a plan to make that number. When you learn to tell your story in sales, that is a valuable skill, and people will want to listen. Lastly, he told me to make friends with your clients, and they will become lifelong customers. You’ll build your reputation by keeping your word."
