Jacksonville, Florida (NASDAQ-LSTR) Landstar System, Inc., a safety-first non-asset based provider of transportation capacity and logistics services, announced today that two Landstar Business Capacity Owners (BCOs) were awarded 2006 Safe Driver of the Year awards from the National Safety Council (NSC). BCO is the Landstar term used to refer to the independent small business owners who supply the company with truck capacity used to haul freight under exclusive lease arrangements.
Landstar BCOs Diane Benjamin and Scotty Collett have each earned the NSC 2006 Safe Driver of the Year award in their respective categories – Collett in the Tractor-trailer division and Benjamin in the Under 10,000 Pound Sprinter category.
"The National Safety Council is proud to honor Scotty Collett and Diane Benjamin for their outstanding driving records and their ongoing commitment to safe driving,” said National Safety Council President and CEO Alan C. McMillan.
According to the NSC, awards were presented to drivers in 23 different categories. Each driver’s record, as self-reported and documented by their company, was reviewed and evaluated by the NSC Safe Driver Committee. Those awarded had the best driving record in the country for that particular category, based on the total number of years and miles or hours behind the wheel, number of accidents and type of vehicle driven.
Earlier this year, Collett was honored as a Landstar 4 Million Mile Safe Driver and Benjamin as a Landstar Million Mile Safe Driver. Landstar Million Milers have traveled more than one-million preventable-accident, claim-free miles. Benjamin is one of the first BCOs to be named a Million Miler for Landstar Express America, a Landstar subsidiary which specializes in hauling expedited freight. Collett is the second BCO in Landstar history to reach the 4 million mile mark. He is also a Landstar Roadstar, the company’s highest honor recognizing BCOs who consistently provide the highest levels of safety, productivity and excellent customer service.
"We’re extremely proud to be associated with Scotty and Diane and proud of their accomplishments. Their professionalism and driving skills exemplify the discipline and focus on safety that Landstar Business Capacity Owners display every day,” said Landstar President and CEO Henry Gerkens. "We appreciate that the National Safety Council has recognized them both as among the safest and best professional truck operators on our roads.”
