Jacksonville, Florida (NASDAQ-LSTR) Landstar System, Inc., a safety-first non-asset based provider of transportation capacity and logistics services, has named Terry Morgan Briggs Landstar Safety Officer (LSO) of the Year for 2005. The award was presented at Landstar’s annual convention held in Orlando, Florida, at the end of May.
Briggs is the safety officer for Freight 48 Logistics, an independent Landstar agency based in Covington, Georgia. As a safety officer, Briggs works to instill Landstar’s safety-first philosophy in business capacity owners (BCOs), customers and the local public. BCO is the Landstar term used to refer to the independent small business owners who supply the company with the truck capacity used to haul freight under exclusive lease arrangements.
"It’s wonderful and I’m humbled to receive this honor ahead of my peers who do so much to promote safety at Landstar,” said Briggs, who is known for ending every phone conversation with a safety message. "You never know when it will click and make someone take a few extra steps toward safety.”
Landstar’s extensive outreach safety effort includes employees, customers, Landstar’s independent network of capacity providers and the public at large. In addition to education, awareness and training programs, the company hosts a nationwide Safety Thursday conference call each month and promotes Mutual Understanding of Safety Together (M.U.S.T.) – a unique program that brings shippers together with Landstar representatives to build safer working environments at shipping facilities and develop effective delivery processes.
Candidates for Landstar Safety Officer of the Year are required to actively support all safety, security and compliance programs and initiatives on a consistent basis. In addition to working in tandem with their local LSO Region Council, they must participate regularly in Landstar’s Safety Thursday conference calls and loss prevention programs.
Briggs’ contributions to Landstar’s safety culture include her creation of a safety newsletter, which she distributes to agency employees and BCOs. She developed an incentive program to reward the BCO with the best response to a safety quiz posed in each issue. Briggs has also taken an active roll in promoting safety in her community by getting area schools involved in industry programs like Trucker Buddies and arranging No-Zone trailers presentations where students can experience for themselves what traffic looks like from the cab of a truck.
"Terry has demonstrated both initiative and innovation in promoting Landstar’s safety-first message to both BCOs and the general public ,” said Landstar President and CEO Henry Gerkens. "This award reaffirms Landstar’s commitment to meeting the highest standards for over-the-road safety.”
